Mr. Andrew C. Payne

On May 27, 1955, a brown-eyed, bouncing baby entered into this world through the bodily vessel of his parents, the late Mr. James Lampkin and Mrs. Annie Ruth Payne Banks, named Andrew C. Payne, affectionately known as Drew and An-C. Drew was born in Opelika, AL but almost had dual residency between his birth place and Middletown, OH. There he learned gymnastics from a cousin and grew his talents as a child landing him the nickname “Flip”; His talents even landed him on The Col Chic & Bozo Show in the 1960s, a broadcasting program out of Columbus, GA, while a student at Carver Elementary School. His love of sports extended beyond gymnastics, including track, swimming, and his most beloved, basketball. He joined the OHS varsity basketball team in the 9th grade and excelled throughout school to earn various scholarships, including a full scholarship to Washington State. As much as he loved the game, his love of family was bigger. Andrew graduated from Opelika High School in 1973 and started work at Uniroyal Tire Plant to support his family. And soon a young woman, Lindie, caught his eye. He later went to Opelika Technical College, currently known as Southern Union Community College, and graduated in 1982 as an electrician. He continued his passion at Uniroyal and was one of the starting members of the basketball team which turned into a traveling, industrial league, winning numerous championships. He never missed a day from work, except for his honeymoon. Andrew was united in holy matrimony to Lindie Bryant on August 23,1986. To this 37.5 year union one daughter was born, Amanda, who he affectionately called Sweet Pea and Sweets. He went on to retire from Uniroyal in 1993 and started a new career or careers over the next 25 years. As many knew, Andrew had a high drive and entrepreneurial spirit that started shortly before retiring. Some of his businesses included a Clothing & Print store in downtown Opelika, a Sports Bar and Lounge in Auburn, Trucking company, and Tire/Mechanic. With his photographic memory, he operated on the philosophy of really thinking things out first to work smarter. As well as, someone else’s trash is another man’s treasure and could build and make anything work again. Andrew was truly a provider and helped anyone he could to start jobs and entrepreneur journeys of their own. At an early age, he accepted Christ and united with the St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Opelika. And later attended Shiloh #2 AME Zion Church in Opelika as an adult. He was truly a kind, gentle, spirit that would do all he could for his family, friends, and community. On Sunday, March 3rd, Andrew quietly transitioned at home to eternal peace in a new home. He is preceded in death by one sister Kimberly Lampkin of Kettering, OH. While he will truly be missed he leaves treasured memories of his life to be shared by: his loving and supportive wife, Lindie; his devoted daughter, Amanda; adoring mother, Annie Ruth Payne Banks; three brothers, Carl Henry Payne, Timothy (Delphine) Payne, and Willie James (Sonja) Payne all of Opelika, AL; two sisters, Joe Ann Bess of Opelika, AL, and Tracy Lampkin of Dayton, OH; one uncle, Ben Payne of Opelika, AL, five aunts, Ezela Torbert of Beauregard, AL, Lorine Hodge, Lula Pearl Payne, Cheryl Payne all of Opelika, AL, and Edna “Toot” Lampkin of MIddletown, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
