Mrs. Julia Rose Nelms

Julia Rose Nelms was the fifth child born to the late Alex, Sr. and Bessie Harge Smith on September 15, 1933, in Davenport, Alabama. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a faithful member of Rehobeth C.M.E. Church in Davenport, where she began a lifelong journey of faith, service, and compassion. Julia received her education through the Lowndes County School System and graduated from Calhoun Laboratory High School of Alabama State College on May 29, 1953, in Calhoun, Alabama. She continued her education at Alabama State College (now Alabama State University), where she met the love of her life, Roosevelt Nelms. On September 15, 1957, Julia and Roosevelt were united in holy matrimony by the Reverend William C. Dobbins at St. Paul Methodist Church, surrounded by their family and friends. Following their marriage, they established their home in Opelika, Alabama, where they built a life rooted in faith, hard work, and love for their community. A Life of Service and Dedication Julia began her career at Woolworth's in downtown Opelika, where she faithfully served as a cook for more than 25 years until the store closed on December 31, 1982, after serving the community for five decades. During her years at Woolworth's, coworkers affectionately described Julia as: "A little lady with an energy and vigor that is hard to crush. She tends to look on the bright side of things and feels no anger because of her situation." Her unwavering work ethic and warm personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Julia later continued her career with several businesses throughout the Opelika area, including Fashion Bug, Dress Barn, and Dillard's. Throughout her years of service, she received numerous Employee Appreciation Awards recognizing her outstanding customer service, professionalism, and dedication to excellence. Faithful Service and Generosity After settling in Opelika, Julia and her husband became devoted members of Ferguson Chapel C.M.E. Church, where they faithfully worshipped and served for many years. Julia served as President of the Matrons, leading numerous successful church programs and fundraising efforts. Whenever financial goals were established for church ministries under her leadership, she worked diligently to ensure they were not only met but often exceeded. Her commitment earned her numerous awards and special recognition for her faithful service to the church. Following the passing of her beloved husband, Julia remained a devoted member of Ferguson Chapel and continued serving the Opelika community with the same spirit of love and generosity. She also volunteered with the Springhill Community Neighborhood Watch, demonstrating her commitment to the safety and well-being of others. Julia's kindness extended far beyond her local community. Through her generosity, she faithfully supported many charitable organizations. Her giving heart reflected her unwavering belief that helping others was one of life's greatest callings. A Legacy of Love Although Julia loved to travel and spend time with family and friends, Opelika always remained home in her heart. She treasured the relationships she built throughout her life and was known for her beautiful smile, generous spirit, gentle encouragement, and unwavering faith in God. On Sunday, July 19, 2026, Julia peacefully entered eternal rest at Magnolia Haven Nursing Home in Tuskegee, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roosevelt Nelms; her parents, Alex, Sr., and Bessie Harge Smith; her brothers, Herman Smith, Alex Smith Jr., and Lee Smith; as well as her sisters, Nettie Ruth Means and Willie Mae Williams. Those Left to Cherish Her Memory Julia leaves to cherish her loving memory, one sister-in-law, Geraldine Nelms, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, former coworkers, lifelong friends, neighbors, and the many people whose lives she touched throughout the Opelika community. She also leaves behind her cherished Ferguson Chapel C.M.E. Church family and the Love family, who will forever remember her unwavering faith, servant's heart, and enduring love. Though she has departed this earthly life, the legacy of her kindness, generosity, and devotion to God and family will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.
